Notation can be pretty difficult. It gets better if you read more math that requires some degree of maturity. If you are into calculus, I recommend picking up some kind of analysis textbook - the calculus will give you the intuition to get through the tough notation. If you are more into linear algebra, I'd say pick up some number theory book or even abstract algebra, depending on your interests. I can give recommendations for those. I hear "numerical methods for scientists & engineers" is good.leverdujour

Oh, wow, let me know if you remember what it is please. :)

The Philadelphia Area Seminar on History of Mathematics

The new schedule is up and is here http://www1.villanova.edu/villanova/artsci/mathematics/pashom/schedule.html.

The first meeting is:

The Philadelphia Area Seminar on History of Mathematics begin its fall season on Thursday, September 15, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in room 103, Mendel Science Center, Villanova University. We begin with conversation and a light supper (donation: $10.00). When the discussion lags, perhaps around 6:30 or 6:45, . V. Frederick Rickey of the United States Military Academy will speak on “Polish Logic from Warsaw to Dublin: The Life and Work of Jan Lukasiewicz”

Abstract: A few years after earning his Ph.D. in Lwow under Twardowski, Jan Lukasiewicz (1878-1956) joined the faculty of the newly reopened University of Warsaw where he became, along with Lesniewski and his student Tarski, one of the founders of the Warsaw School of Logic. He did seminal research in many-valued logics, propositional calculi, modal logic, and the history of logic, especially concerning Aristotle’s syllogistic. He left Warsaw toward the end of World War II and found a new home at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin where he continued his creative work. Directions: Villanova University is located on route 30, Lancaster Avenue, just east of I-476. If you drive to the meeting, enter Villanova by the main gate on Ithan Avenue, just north of Lancaster Avenue (route 30), opposite the Pavilion. Tell the guard you are attending the History of Mathematics Seminar. Ask for directions either to the Mendel Lot, where there is limited parking around the greenhouse, or to the St. Augustine lot. From the Mendel Lot, enter the building by the right door under the arch connecting wings of the building, go up one flight of stairs, turn left and follow the hall to room 103, on the left. From the St. Augustine Lot walk past the St. Augustine Center for the Liberal Arts to the main entrance of the Mendel Science Center. Inside Mendel go up one flight and walk the full length of the hall to room 103, on the left.

Public transportation: Take SEPTA’s Thorndale train to the Villanova station. If outbound from center city go down through the tunnel to the inbound side. From the inbound platform a few steps lead to the Mendel parking lot. Walk straight ahead to the entrance on the right under the arch connecting wings of the building, go up one flight of stairs, turn left and follow the hall to room 103, on the left.

Anyone going?

Purging

Today I threw away a whole lot of hair dye.  I’m not planning on doing hair at home anymore, so what’s the point of having crappy old hair dye anyway?

No problem (assuming you are chictogeek). Feel free to ask me anything in general in regards to math.leverdujour

Cool, thanks.  Do you have a mathematics degree?  (Yeah, that’s me).

It’s Slow

So, I had all these grandiose ideas about posting math events, but it’s summer, so I doubt there will be much going on.  For the 3 people that are following, hopefully there will be updates in a few months.  I’d sure like to get my Philly Math on.
